Ganesh has forsaken me. What a crappy ending to yet another Denver sports season. It looks even worse in writing.... Here's how the Broncos, Rockies, Nuggets and Avalanche finished their last playoff series:
Broncos: Oh, that's right, the Broncos didn't even make the playoffs last season.
Rockies: 2007 World Series Game 1 - Boston 13, Colorado 1 Game 2 - Boston 2, Colorado 1 Game 3 - Boston 10, Colorado 5 Game 4 - Boston 4, Colorado 3 SWEEP
Nuggets: 2008 NBA Playoffs - Western Conference, First Round Game 1 - Los Angeles 128, Denver 114 Game 2 - Los Angeles 122, Denver 107 Game 3 - Los Angeles 102, Denver 84 Game 4 - Los Angeles 107, Denver 101 SWEEP
Avalanche: 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs - Western Conference Semifinals Game 1 - Detroit 4, Colorado 3 Game 2 - Detroit 5, Colorado 1 Game 3 - Detroit 4, Colorado 3 Game 4 - Detroit 8, Colorado 2 SWEEP
It is clear the sports gods are not pleased. So what events in Colorado sports history might have brought this severe smiting upon us? Here are my guesses:
1. The state said, "Thanks, but no thanks" to the 1976 Olympics. This was a big one, and I expect we'll be paying for it for a long time. The only way to break the curse is to successfully host an Olympics.
2. The Buffs were gifted with a 5th down in 1990. In what is considered by many to be one of the greatest sports blunders of all time, the Colorado Buffaloes scored a game-winning touchdown on a phantom down, thus avoiding an upset at the hands of the unranked Missouri Tigers and moving on to share a national championship.
3. The Rockies built Coors Field on an ancient Indian burial ground. Ok, this is pure speculation on my part... but it would certainly explain a lot.
