The weekend from hell

Melo       Tulo       Avs lose

Wow... tough weekend for sports in the mile high city. The Rockies continued to struggle, the Avs got blown out in Detroit and appear to be lost without Peter Forsberg, and the Nuggets took another giant step toward elimination. (Above photos: Denver Post)

Luckily for the Rockies, they have a few games left to iron out the wrinkles and try to assemble a bullpen that works.

The Avs and Nuggets, though, are running out of time. And things are looking rather bleak for both of them. After a tremendous first round series against the Wild, Jose Theodore can't seem to figure out the Red Wings. Maybe he's still under the weather, and he'll return to form once the team returns home for game 3, but if not, it looks like Quenneville might have to make a change in net in the middle of a playoff series - never a good thing. On the offensive end of the ice, the Avs are clearly missing Forsberg, and their powerplay, which was miserable all year long, now looks hopeless.

I don't even know where to start with the Nuggets.... With the exception of K-Mart, not a single one of them played with a sense of urgency in what was ostensibly a must-win situation yesterday. The TNT broadcasting team made several comments about the players missing out on their usual afternoon naps yesterday, but the Nuggets apparently figured out a way to take theirs on the court. It's obvious that they lack the discipline to compete in the playoffs. Now I'm just hoping they can wake up in time for game 4 and muster enough pride to avoid the sweep.

*Sigh*... maybe I was a tad hasty in my rejection of Denver's ranking amongst the most miserable sports cities in America.

A marathon game and a step toward round 2

April 18, 1:15 PM
Photo: APGreat night for Denver sports last night.... The Rockies outlasted the Padres in a 22-inning marathon. The game took 6 hours and 16 minutes to finish, which means I could have run an actual marathon and been home before the final out (assuming... Read More
