From the Principals' Union CSA-NYC. I too will be there but I will have a birdseye view, as I will be on the panel discussing from a parent's point of view "Mayoral Control" and is it good for our public school children and their education. What is it? When did it start and why is it being reviewed now?
Unfortunately too many parents are still at this phase of the questioning. It seems that only a few (if you call over 2500 parent volunteers a few) are truly aware of the magnitude of these questions.
My hope is that everyone will want to peek in and see what all of the talk is about. It may be the biggest eye-opener for public school parents to date.
Dear Colleagues:
The New York State Legislature passed a bill changing the governance of New York City Public Schools in 2002. This law created a seven year pilot program giving all decision making to power to the Mayor and the Chancellor who is appointed by the Mayor. The law sunsets in June, 2009 and there are three options for the future.
· Revise the system (keep some aspects and reform others)
· Renew Mayoral Control
· Revert to the prior system of 32 elected School Boards and a Central Board that appoints a Chancellor
The Panel Discussion presented by the Black Caucus of the CSA will feature a panel of elected officials, educators and community advocates. The discussion will be moderated by Associate Commissioner Sheila Evans-Tranumn, New York State Education Department. Assemblyman Darryl C Towns, Chairman of the New York State Black and Puerto Rican Caucus; Dr. Daryl Rock, Harlem Children's Zone and Councilwoman Leticia James have confirmed their participation.
