Is your car ready for a White Christmas? Are you dreaming of a White Christmas? Can you imagine pulling up the driveway to Grandma's house being welcomed with hugs and the smell of fresh baked pumpkin pie?
What if your dream turns into a nightmare when uncle Joe gives you a hard time because you are from the desert, and didn't prepare properly for cold weather travel?
Here are some things to consider that often get overlooked in the desert.
- Fresh wiper blades and washer solvent with freeze protection
- Proper radiator anti-freeze concentration
- Healthy battery (cold weather starting requires additional power)
- Oil viscosity (Some manufacturers recommend thinner oil in lower temperatures)
- Good heater and defroster operation
- Warm blankets in case you get stranded
- Work gloves (fueling can be unpleasant with wind chill)
- Ice scraper for the windshield
Of course, remember your standard travel stuff such as tires, belts, hoses, and games for the kids (Fighting from boredom can be worse than breaking down!)
You can check the National Weather Service for conditions along your route. Tire chains may be needed or an alternate route planned if conditions look severe.
Fully charge your cell phone and fill up the tank early in case the next gas station is closed.
Say hi to Grandma for me, and enjoy a warm cup of hot chocolate.
