At a meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology recently, a lead researcher at a fertility clinic in Sydney, Australia, Dr. David Greening reported, having sex every day will improve the quality of sperm.
A study conducted on 118 men who had damaged sperm showed signs of improvement after having sex daily for one week. Of these men, 81 percent showed a significant 12% decrease in damaged sperm.
The theory maintains sperm that stays in the testes too long has more of a chance of damage; thus decreasing quality, quantity, viability and motility.
Additional research unrelated to Greening’s study, shows there are many factors that can damage sperm such as alcohol, foods, hot baths, saunas, laptop computers, cell phones, tobacco products, pesticides and drugs to name a few. Some docs now believe that soy-based products negatively impact sperm as well.
Up until now it has been believed that abstinence increases the amount of viable sperm and it was thought wise to wait and let the sperm build up before engaging in intercourse. However, Greening and his team of researchers at the fertility clinic have shed some new light on the subject with significant results.
Not all researchers agree that the idea of daily sex works and adds up to a successful conception. The added pressure of trying to maintain a daily sexual ritual could add too much stress and become a hindrance to couples trying to conceive.
