One of the most important decisions a couple can make together is deciding to have a child.
Getting pregnant and having a child is one thing; getting pregnant and doing everything you can to have a healthy pregnancy and baby is another choice; and a choice not to be taken lightly. It is the first decision you make as (potential) good parents and the choices you make now may affect the outcome later.
There are many choices a couple can make together to prepare their bodies for a healthy conception and pregnancy beginning with diet, exercise and vitamins.
Unfortunately, lackluster nutritional habits not only can lead to fetal demise or problems, but can cause fertility issues for some couples as well.
For women, folic acid in a prenatal vitamin is one of the most important supplements she can take to begin to prepare the body for pregnancy.
By taking prenatal vitamins months before conception, the chances of neural tube defects (NTD) in an unborn child are minimized substantially. Neural tube defects usually occur during the first twenty eight days of pregnancy and most often can be associated with an insufficient folic acid level within the mother.
Folic acid can be found in foods like bread and cereal, but to get the recommended daily allowance of 800mcg, it is necessary to take a supplement. Prenatal vitamins also contain minerals like calcium, iron, Vitamins A, C, D and E to name a few.
