Comedian Katt Williams was arrested early Monday on charges of burglary and trespassing, according to CNN. A police report confirmed that Williams broke into a house in Newnan GA, a rural area west of Atlanta, owned by record producer Barry Hankerson, once married to Gladys Knight and uncle of late R&B singer Aaliyah. Police arrested the entertainer for breaking into the home with a crowbar and taking thousands of dollars worth of jewelry and coins.
A Coweta County magistrate and a detention officer at Coweta County Jail confirmed that Williams remains in custody and has a bond set at over $41,000.
The comedian's attorney, William Briggs, said that while working on a movie produced by Hankerson, Williams had been living at the home.
An employee of Hankerson's called police to report the break-in. According to police reports, there were around $3,500 in jewelry and collectible coins stolen. Briggs said the arrest centered around an argument between Williams and Hankerson's employee, Daniel Paul Broach.
Hankerson has come to Williams' defense regarding the arrest, stating that he had given permission for Williams to stay in his home 'indefinitely'.
Alan Clarke, the attorney representing Williams in court on Monday, said Williams' bond papers were being prepared.
Williams started as a stand-up comedian and has acted in several movies including Norbit, First Sunday, and The Perfect Holiday. In 2006, he starred in his own comedy special on HBO. More recently, he has suffered some setbacks, including a bankruptcy and a hospitalization that according to his publicist was due to fatigue.
