Welcome back to Mannywood ladies and gentlemen.
Manny Ramirez has notified the Dodgers of his intent to pick up his option and play with them in the 2010 season. His agent Scott Boras said that "his comfort level" with the club was the overriding factor in his decision to stay.
However there were other factors, perhaps underwriting the move. For one, he had that little banned substance episode costing him 50 games. Two, he continues to be a question mark influence on any team's chemistry. Three, who would pick up a 37-year old guy making $20 million with items one and two?
Manny has indicated to teammates how playing the outfield is punishing his legs which suggested he may have denied the option and searched for a team with a designated hitter spot open. Now that he is committed for one more year, it appears that his agent Boras and Dodger GM Ned Colletti will work with the Dodgers field management team to possibly share the load between Manny and say Juan Pierre.
Pierre is a returning outfielder who spelled Ramirez during the 50 game suspension, and by all accounts kept the team progressing. He was selected the winner of the fourth annual Roy Campanella Award, which is given to the Dodgers player who best exemplifies the spirit and leadership of the late Hall of Fame catcher.
Pierre and Ramirez could indeed be a viable platooning option for the Dodgers in left field. Hopefully it's a good platoon, and not the kind in the 1987 Oliver Stone movie Platoon. Hey it's Manny; it's Hollywood; anything can happen.
