Five natural remedies for acid reflux
Tired of popping pills for heartburn or acid reflux? There are alternatives to antacids and pharmaceuticals. In our "over the counter" society many people self diagnose and self medicate. Doctors are quick to write prescriptions and people assume they always know what's best.
Some people who think they have too much stomach acid actually don't produce enough. Others have abused their stomachs with alcohol, over eating and anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen.
Many people can cure or manage their acid reflux and heartburn themselves, without expensive drugs.
-
Apple Cider Vinegar: As we age, our bodies may produce less stomach acid. This causes food to not digest properly, which in turn, causes stomach acid to "back up" in the esophagus. Taking antacids may give temporary relief but the heartburn usually comes back after the next meal. Taking a little apple cider vinegar (1 to 2 teaspoons) in water after meals can help your body digest food. It is also theorized that apple cider vinegar helps balance the PH in the stomach. Many times just one "dose" a day does the trick.
-
Papaya Enzymes: The natural enzymes in Papaya also help your stomach digest food. Most healthfood stores sell a variety of digestive aides with papaya and other natural digestive enzymes.
-
Honey: Honey has a natural healing and soothing effect and many people find it stops heart burn in its tracks. It can be mixed with the apple cider vinegar as an after meals tonic.
-
Probiotics: Everyone with any digestive problems should be on a good probiotic. The "good" bacteria in them help your body digest food.
-
Barley Grass: Barley grass powders have been found to help many people with heartburn. It is believed to naturally help balance the PH in your body which in turn aides in digestion.
How you eat and how often you eat can also affect digestion. Eat small meals and chew your food thoroughly. In doing so your stomach has less work to do. Your body starts digesting food in your mouth. Let your teeth and saliva do their part in digestion.
Avoid or limit alcohol and if you smoke, quit. Both can aggravate heartburn.
Note: There are people whose stomachs do produce too much acid. If you have been diagnosed by your physician with this disorder, do not stop taking your medication, and some of these remedies may not be for you.
