The #2 hole at the 9 holes, Chicago Park District’s, South Shore Golf Course is only 432 yards (from the blue tees) and a par 4. Yet, if golfers’ second shots from the fairway fly over the green and remain in play, their next shots will be between some rocks and a hard place. Between a rock and a hard place is usually a metaphor; but in this case has a literal meaning of two, unappealing choices. (Click this Scylla and Charybdis link to find out why.)
From the teeing area, the # 2 hole points northwest. Until golfers arrive at the putting green, this hole is not especially difficult; the fairway is the widest one on this course. However, when golfers arrive at the small, putting green the difficulty begins. The putting green is approximately 75 feet east of northbound U.S. 41 (South Shore Drive).
The rocks to the rear of the putting green mark out of bounds; so golfers who airmail the green will likely end up close to them. Proximity to these stony markers will likely be such that they will interfere with golfers’ backswings. Do not panic! Rule 24-2 of The Rules of Golf allow relief, without penalty, from the rocks (immovable obstructions). Golfers can lift, after marking, clean (See my article, Three, Ball Washers.) and drop their balls in an area that avoids swing interference by the rocks, and is not nearer the hole.
The hard place (Read as difficult.) is the putting green. It is elevated, and as I mentioned earlier, small. Golfers will need to do flop shots (one of the most difficult shots for amateur golfers) to hold the green. Otherwise, their pitches will end close to the west, out of bounds, metal fence; or sitting in the fairway.
South Shore’s, #2 hole is this course’s longest, but not narrowest. However, this hole is the most difficult with a “1”, hole handicap. Golfers, who score pars on this hole, should pat themselves on their backs. Players who get birdies should treat themselves, after their rounds, to something rare. If golfers score eagles, they should get some official or fellow-competitor to attest to this score; post scorecard copies in the starter shack; and ask for a future, free golf round.
