For the past several months, every time any DJ plays "Ignorance" by the girl-fronted rock band Paramore on local ABQ radio station 104.1 The Edge, they inevitably introduce the song by saying, "The girls can rock, too!"
Alright, I am 100% pro rocking awesome girls. However, I find it reductive and somewhat insulting that every single DJ on this station finds the need to point out that a) there is a GIRL here, folks! and, b) she's really rockin'! It's a disservice to all the other rocking female musicians that have come out over the past decade or two. It's not like Paramore introduced the female gender into the rock world. Beyond that, there's only one girl in the band!
So I thought for a fun Sunday I would make a short list of chicks who rock, in case there are folks out there who really don't know (or maybe forgot) that there are women in the world of music who can totally kick your head in.
1. Neko Case. Yes, she's got more of a country twang on her than most artists you hear on The Edge, but the girl can wail on her guitar. She's smart, she's funny, and her music will put you in a weird, southern summer kind of place, replete with serial killers!
2. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Jamming out with catchy hooks, fast-paced drums, and growly girl vocals, Joan Jett covers love, transgenderism, and everything else with her awesome London-based sounds.
3. Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders. Every VH1 special ever made has noted how Chrissy holds her guitar "just like a man". You know pop music would never be what it is without the Pretenders and Chrissy's sexy vocalizations. Admit it. And now she's an animal rights activist, too.
4. The Donnas. How did we all forget the Donnas? They're an all-girl group with some serious catch in their pop tuneage. They sing about love, sex, and partying. You know, girl stuff. And they're on tour with Blondie and Pat Benatar -- a totally rocking chick fest!
5. Lily Maase and the Suite Unraveling. Full disclosure: I went to high school with Lily, but she's been a guitar-rocking prodigy all her life, from what I can tell. Lily was taught by her amazing father, Steve Maase, and currently lives in Brooklyn. She recently wrote the score for a rock musical about the invention of the vibrator called Oh My! Check out her kicky jazz and experimental licks, and you won't be disappointed.
There's five off the top of my head. And I didn't even get into hip hop, jazz, R&B, country, or any of those other fantastic genres where chicks really rock. Who are your favorite ladies who rock?
