BJ's Thrift & More can save you lots of money.

This is the first in a continuing series of Friday articles profiling one of our area’s consignment and thrift stores.

BJ Byington and her husband James like to work. They have retired three times and cannot seem to stay retired. After their last retirement, they opened BJ’s Thrift and More on November 1, 2007. BJ laughed and told me that she and James, who are ages 71 and 72 respectively, are “too old to work anywhere else.” (You would never guess, however, that they are in their 70s.) BJ’s Thrift and More is their way to keep busy and to supplement their income.

BJ does have experience in the thrift store business. She used to own a thrift store about 12 years ago in Gate City, Virginia, and another in Kingsport, Tennessee. She was semi-retired at the time. After awhile, she quit the thrift store business and went back to work for others. Of course, she did eventually retire again. Of course, she discovered once again that retirement really was not for her.

BJ’s Thrift and More is strictly a thrift store. (She does not take anything on consignment.) She buys gently-used merchandise from customers and re-sales it at extremely affordable prices. You can really find “a little bit of everything” at BJ’s. She has a large selection of clothing for all ages and for men and women. In addition, she has numerous fashion accessories; e.g., purses and jewelry. You can also find baby items, furniture, items for the home décor, and kitchen items. She also has some new items. (I got an absolutely fabulous jacket there for a fraction of the price that I would have paid in a large department store.) You will also be pleased to know that you can find seasonal items, such as fall and Christmas decorations.  All of this, and you will soon find, too, that not only is the service exceptional but  that BJ will soon be treating you like family, as well.

BJ and James are also about giving back to the community. Once a month, they make donations to the homeless. In addition, whenever a church notifies them that a member is in need, BJ gladly helps them out with clothing or any other items they might need. This quiet way of helping the less-fortunate in our area is a real inspiration and reminds us that we can all help in our own way.

BJ’s Thrift and More is located at 5400 Fort Henry Drive (Royal Pines Plaza) in the Colonial Heights area of Kingsport, Tennessee. They are open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. You may also call them at 423-726-2397.
