This was certainly one of the most eagerly anticipated high school games this season and boy did these teams deliver. Not only would the winner receive a high seeding in the playoff draw, but more importantly the conference title was on the line. Pennsbury was coming off of a tough loss, while Neshaminy had been rolling, winners of five straight. On Friday night, the top two teams in the suburban 1 national conference did battle on Pennsbury’s home field and extra time was needed to decide the winner.
There is no doubt that the first half belonged to the Pennsbury Falcons. They controlled the clock and overpowered Neshaminy. In the first quarter, a Pennsbury drive culminated in a 1-yard touchdown score by running back Dante Devine. Their defense stifled the Redskins throughout the half and held them scoreless. Before halftime, Falcon’s quarterback Brandon Pepper punched in a 1-yard touchdown to make the score 14-0 as the teams went to the locker-room.
The Redskins were rejuvenated in the second half and started the scoring on a 2-yard run into the end zone by running back Bryan Dean. Pennsbury responded with yet another Pepper 1-yard run and made the score a comfortable 20-6 going into the fourth quarter, but there was plenty of fight left in Neshaminy.
Dean scored once again when he ran 5 yards for an important touchdown to make the contest 20-14. The Neshaminy defense came up big in the fourth quarter, holding the Falcons scoreless. Neshaminy wasted no time in tying the score halfway through the fourth quarter when quarterback Brian Titus found receiver Ricky Williams for an 85-yard touchdown pass. The Redskins had the opportunity to take the lead, but the extra point was blocked by the Falcon’s special teams and the game was knotted up at 20-20.
Both teams couldn’t score again in regulation and the game entered overtime. Pennsbury got the ball first and converted on yet another Pepper 1-yard score, his third of the game to make the score 27-20. That would be the final score as Pennsbury prevented Neshaminy from breaching the end zone on their only overtime possession.
This was a huge bounce back win for the Falcons and they must be considered one of the favorites in the playoffs alongside North Penn. Neshaminy has been playing incredibly well and they also have a chance to make a long run in the playoffs. This was the first conference title for Pennsbury since 1993. If this game was any indication, this is going to be a very exciting postseason.
