Upon the closing of the merger of Pfizer and Wyeth on October 15, Pfizer had 20 research centers. Moving swiftly with integration plans, Pfixer announced on Monday that there will now be five major research centers, serving as central hubs for research activities in BioTherapeutics, PharmaTherapeutics, and Vaccines. The five sites are located in Cambridge, MA; Groton, CT; Pearl River, NY; La Jolla, CA; and Sandwich, UK. In addition, a few specialized research centers will remain open, such as a lab in San Francisco, CA that focuses on monoclonal antibody discovery, a research center in Cambridge, UK that specializes in regenerative medicine work, and a R&D center in Shanghai, China.
In Cambridge, MA, Pfizer will operate its research campus on Cambridgepark Drive near Alewife Station and its facility at 620 Memorial Drive in Cambridge as a single major research center. The Cambridgepark Drive campus was previously known as Wyeth’s research center in Cambridge, with its Genetics Institute and expertise in bioinformatics and cancer drug research. Pfizer’s Research Technology Center on Memorial Drive near M.I.T. is known for being an innovative leader in stem cell research.
Not disclosed yet are plans for restructuring Pfizer’s manufacturing facilities in the wake of the merger with Wyeth. Business leaders in the Merrimack Valley area are hopeful that the Wyeth biotech manufacturing facility in Andover, MA will remain open, as the plant employed around 1,700 workers as of early 2009.
