"What if I get laid off?"

"What if my hours get cut?"

"What if lose my house?"

It's hard to keep from worrying about your job and finances even in good times, let alone times when the unemployment level is staggeringly high.

But what if you could change the way you play "what if"?

Just for fun, try this easy exercise for a few minutes, preferably when you're feeling at least somewhat relaxed.

  • Get some paper and a pen
  • Start thinking and dreaming about the way you want life to go
  • Make a list of what life could be like; a positive "what if" list. Examples: "What if I got a huge raise out of nowhere?", "What if I won the lottery this weekend?", "What if a relative I didn't even know I had left me 2 million dollars tomorrow?", "What if my dream job landed in my lap?", or "What if I was successful at everything I tried?"
  • Keep writing until you are completely out of wonderful "what ifs"

Now that you've practiced the exercise, how do you feel? Probably a little lighter in the stress department!

Try this exercise whenever you're feeling really down and out, too. Why? Because worrying about something you have absolutely no control over only adds stress and misery to your life; it solves nothing. However, adding a few minutes of excitement and escape to your life will have far-reaching benefits, such as renewed focus, less stress, and a more hopeful outlook on life.

Play the "what if" game today!
