Yesterday my husband and I went to see the Butterfly Conservatory at the Museum of Natural History on 79th street and Central Park West. The Butterfly exhibit runs until May, 2010 so you still have time to see it. It consists of a reasonably small room that inhabits a tropical forest temperature and it is filled with over 500 live butterflies! It is beautiful to walk in there and have them flying all around you. It was fun to watch the young children discovering the beauty of the butterfly. You are allowed to take pictures of the butterflies but this can prove difficult, because the nature of the butterfly is to show up and take off when you least expect it.
I have always loved butterflies so for me it was exciting to experience their beauty in the middle of NYC with winter rapidly approaching. I’ve always loved their symbolism. Butterflies can symbolize the soul and transformation. They can also stand for freedom and joy. In Chinese culture, two butterflies flying together are a symbol of love. There is also a Japanese superstition that says that if a butterfly enters your guestroom and perches behind the bamboo screen, the person whom you love is coming to see you. Some even say that when a butterfly lands on you, it’s good luck. A butterfly landed on both my husband and I, so we hope that one is true (see our pictures here)!
If you want more scientific information about butterflies and their development, you can learn all of that at the exhibit too. Admission for the exhibit was a bit high ($24 per person) and your stay in the butterfly room won’t take you very long, probably not more than 20 minutes. It is more expensive than a movie but it is probably cheaper than a play and it is a unique experience. So, you need to decide if it is worth it to you. The up side is that your ticket also includes general admission to the museum, so afterwards you can walk around to see rooms full of large dinosaurs (my husband loved this) and learn all about them. You can also explore the history of the earth and rock formations and can even learn what you would weigh on the moon!
So, this is probably a good date pick for butterfly lovers, history buffs and animal lovers. If you go, enjoy and let us know what you thought!

Paulette
