Lawrence Frank may need to ask assistant coach Doug Overton if he can still compete at the NBA level.
In a Nets season that should be entitled, "The Walking Wounded," New Jersey lost more than a game. Courtney Lee left with a strained groin as the Nets fell, 97-94, to the Philadelphia 76ers.
Lee joins Devin Harris, Keyon Dooling, Yi Jianlian, Jarvis Hayes, Tony Battie, and Chris Douglas-Roberts on the injured list. The extent of his injury is not certain at this time, but the Nets could be down to eight players for their contest against the Boston Celtics tomorrow night.
Despite the injuries, the Nets had every chance to beat the Sixers. The Nets led, 73-68, heading into the fourth quarter. The game was tied at 92 late, but an Andre Iguoda three-pointer put the Nets in a hole they could not escape from.
The loss drops New Jersey to 0-6, the worst start in franchise history.
The Nets defended the Sixers' stars well, holding Iguodala and Elton Brand to a combined 24 points. Philadelphia's bench hurt the Nets though, going off for 45 points.
On the positive side, Brook Lopez delivered the kind of performance the Nets need in order to be successful. The center scored 22 points and hauled in 11 rebounds.
Trenton Hassell, a usual DNP, started and played 46 minutes. In that time, Hassell scored 17 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Hassell filled in for a sick Douglas-Roberts. He is day-to-day with the flu.
The Nets will have their hands full when they return to action tomorrow night at The Izod Center. The Boston Celtics come to town with a full squad, while the Nets could be quite shorthanded. The Nets will most likely have to wait until tomorrow to learn about the availability of both Douglas-Roberts and Lee.
