The New Jersey Nets dropped to 0-4 on the season after displaying offensive ineptitude in the third quarter of tonight's loss to the Charlotte Bobcats.
The Bobcats embarked on a 24-0 run in a third quarter in which the Nets scored a meager seven points. Charlotte overcame a 14-point deficit and beat New Jersey, 79-68, to move to 2-2 on the season.
The Nets' scoring drought lasted over 11 minutes of game action and more than 33 minutes of real time. In that time, the shorthanded Nets lost another key player in Yi Jianlian. He left after the Bobcats' Gerald Wallace rolled up on his leg. The Nets were missing Devin Harris, Keyon Dooling, Jarvis Hayes, Trenton Hassell, and Josh Boone with an assortment of injuries. Hassell missed the game due to personal reasons.
Without Harris, the Nets' offense has not found its rhythm. Rafer Alston shot 1-of-8 from the field and finished with two points. Rookie Terrence Williams played some point with the absence of Harris and Dooling. Williams started hot, making his first four shots, but he missed his next five. Williams finished with 11 points and a forgettable second half.
Chris Douglas-Roberts, who called out the Nets after their performance against Washington, led the team in scoring. He scored 20 points and broke the Bobcats' 24-0 run with a driving lay-up late in the third quarter.
Brook Lopez added 18 points while Courtney Lee scored 13.
Despite shooting a better percentage from the field, the Nets trailed for much of the second half. Gerald Wallace and D.J. Augustin scored 22 and 21 points, respectively. Wallace also added 20 rebounds.
The Nets committed 25 turnovers and were outrebounded, 51-33.
New Jersey improved upon its porous defense from last game, but the offense failed the Nets in Charlotte. Lopez had seven turnovers and could not capitalize on his opportunities until late in the fourth quarter. Besides Bobby Simmons and Terrence Williams, every Net that played turned the ball over at least three times.
The Nets chances to win their first game do not get any easier when they return home to take on Denver Wednesday night.
