There are many things that cause anxiety, such as panic attacks, fears, stress from relationships or work, and depression, to name a few. The most common cause is fear; of losing a job, fear of failure, of losing a loved one, or fear of not being in control. Herbs work to ease anxiety for different reasons. Aromatic herbs work on an emotional level. The aroma of certain foods brings memories of childhood and a time when someone else was in control. Sometimes, the smell of apple pie(cinnamon and nutmeg) can relieve the symptoms of depression. Lemon balm, rosemary, peppermint, and basil are aromatic herbs used in teas and essential oils to help with anxiety.

Some herbs are better known for their ability to calm the nerves. Neroli essential oil, made from orange blossoms, mixed with almond oil, makes a good massage that works quite well on relieving symptoms of anxiety. Angelica essential oil is well known for its ability to relax the mind and body. Rose oil and patchouli in lotion form is good as a massage or use the essential oils in a warm bath to release the aroma.

Rosemary tea often helps with mood swings, while chamomile tea relaxes the nerves. Passion flower is an herb that calms the nerves and aids in falling asleep. Passion flower lowers blood pressure and is recommended when stress is involved. It contains alkaloids and flavonoids that have a sedative effect.

Clary sage relaxes the nerves, helps with depression, and eases anxiety, as well as uplifts the spirit. Clove essential oils act as a stimulant that can brighten the mood. Other herbs used in the treatment of anxiety include hawthorn, St. John's wort, black cohosh, and evening primrose. Through trial and error, each person finds the herbs or combination of herbs that works best for them. Some herbs are used in teas and tinctures, while others are used as oils and extracts. Whether the herbs are ingested, absorbed through the skin, or inhaled, depends on which herbs work best for the individual.

Along with herbal treatments, plenty of rest, a good diet, and exercise are necessary for a healthy mind, body, and spirit. Always consult a doctor before starting any herbal treatment, especially when pregnant or taking medication for chronic conditions.
