On October 11, 2009, Ballston Spa was host to the 7th annual "Way We Were car show. This has become a Columbus Day weekend tradition, since its creation in 2002, when local residents and Ron Regals, owner of the local antique shop approached Tina Mangino, owner of the Mangino auto dealerships in the Capital Region and shows co-chair about the idea of a show. The first show attracted close to 150 cars and has since grown to over 400 entries this year. The show lines Front St starting at the corner Milton Ave and continues down about a 1/2 mile, along the way people are entertained by DJs playing oldies. There are cars to be seen for all tastes in vehicles from the all original cars of th 20's through today, customs, street rods tuners, muscle cars, sports cars and trucks
When Steve Springer the shows co-chair was asked what will happen when there is no longer any more room in town for the show what venue will be used to accommodate all the show cars. He said the show will always be in town, they will just expand to the next street, the Village of Ballston Spa has been very co-operative in planning this event, as it brings people to town to not only enjoy the cars but all the eateries, and shops the town has to offer.
To put on a show like this relies heavily on volunteers and sponsors some of this years sponsors were: Keeler Motorcars, Otto Cadillac, Mangino Buick-Chevrolet, Denooyer Chevrolet, Atlantic British, Earth Care, Extra Space Storage, T-shirt Graphics, and the Ballston Journal.
The show is a judged show, the judges consist of people in the auto business and hobby. Some of this years judges were Ralph Defibaugh from Spa Body Works, the local auto body shop, Vince Monaco a mechanic with Coseos Repair and Maintenance, Frank Viva also a mechanic he's with AutoHaus Cars, and Leo Shepard, he's been a judge for the past 4 years and is a member of the Adirondack Corvette Club.
Judging is based on 4 categories and uses a 100 point system.
The points break down to:
25 for the interior
25 paint
25 engine
25 wheels
There are also 11 classes so no matter what it is you show there will be a class for it. Based on the previous years show classes may be added for the following years show, the new class that was added this year was for muscle cars.
Entry fees for the show are kept affordable at just $10 day of the show and $8 if you pre register. All the money raised stays in the community and goes to local activities like the movies and concerts in Wiswall park during the summer months as well as town beautification, the plants along Main St and in the park.
Spectator admission is free.
So mark your your calendar for next years show, this is a must attend end of the season show.
