It’s the holiday season and everyone is preparing to eat ‘til they drop. Before you know it’s back to reality and strict dieting to shed those extra pounds packed on from holiday delights. Many health conscience people are aware that the most beneficial way of dieting is to eat well balanced meals complete with all the food groups. Many figure that consuming extra amounts of a certain vitamin, mineral, fiber or protein will do wonders, when in fact all you need is the recommended daily amount for your body. Some start substituting carbs for extra protein because it’s said to help build muscles, but can too much protein have an adverse effect?

According to Medicinenet.com:

  • Adding more protein but not more calories or exercise to your diet won't help you build more muscle mass, but it may put your other bodily systems under stress.
  • Eating more protein and increasing total caloric intake while maintaining the same exercise level will build an equal amount of additional fat and muscle mass, according to a study published in 1992 in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

Protein is actually a building block for our muscles, bones, cartilage, skin, hair, and blood. The amount of protein you require depends on your weight and your daily caloric intake. Most Americans consume more than enough protein in their daily diets. Start now to plan your future diet plans for during and after the holidays to ensure that you stay fit and healthy.
