*SPOILER ALERT*

This was the best episode of 24 so far this year, even if they did kill off my new boyfriend, Bill Buchanan. In his memory I will be wearing black for a week and encouraging my husband to grow some stubble.

I have a few problems with Bill’s death, though; like why were there canisters of CH4 in the White House lockdown room? Perhaps I’m not as up on my bunker needs as I should be, but I really don’t get why it was there. Of course, Jack knew it was there and opened the canisters and planned to go back in and make the room explode so Bill could get the President and skedaddle but Bill sacrificed himself after saying that Juma was working with someone on the outside and Jack was the only one he knew who could find out who it was. I think Bill totally underestimated himself. He managed to hook up with Chloe and recreate an underground CTU, flip Tony Almeida back over from the dark side, and makeover himself from stuffed suit to hot older man with some stubble and a mock turtleneck – I don’t think there’s anything he can’t do. But we’ll never know now. Sigh.

I’m also a little disturbed by the bad guys this year. Not only does Jon Voigt make me feel like he’s going to kill everyone in the room with him just for the fun of it, I’m a little disturbed by his side’s ability to improvise. Usually the bad guys have a plan and they follow it to the letter and you catch them when you throw them off a bit. Not these guys. When they realize that Jack is on his way to the hospital to interrogate Burnett they get Quinn up there lickety-split with a canister of paralytic gas (what’s with all the canisters of gas this season?), kill Burnett with a huge shard of glass, and frame Jack for his murder. THAT is thinking on your feet.

A few more questions: is the Vice President playing with the bad guys or simply a wimp? He did everything he could to keep the FBI from storming the White House and rescuing the Prez and I can’t decide if he’s evil or simply spineless.   Did we really need to see Aaron Pierce without his shirt? Isn’t it obvious that Senator Mayer (who will always be Red from That 70’s Show to me) is siding with the bad guys? After the explosion he ran into the room with all of Juma’s men shooting it up waving his hands and yelling “Wait! Wait! Wait!” Like, “Dudes, it’s ME!” He was also pretty nosy about Bill and Jack’s plan earlier on. I’ll be very surprised if I’m wrong about this one.
