Plenty of educational resources are currently available on the Internet at highly discounted rates or even free of charge, including online school math calculators and problem solvers. These online calculators, implemented as globally accessible web applications, provide cost-effective alternative to the traditional hardware counterpart. There is a set of calculators, specially designed for the Internet-enable portable devices with relatively small screen size, like the Apple iPhone™, iPod Touch or Microsoft Zune™ HD (example follows).
Mobile fractions calculator is capable of performing arithmetic operations on up to 3 fractions or mixed numbers simultaneously. Results are displayed as fraction reduced to the lowest terms and corresponding decimal. Improper fractions are automatically converted into corresponding mixed numbers. Decimal equivalents are shown for every fraction, including the result, so the calculator could be also used as simple fraction-to-decimal converter. Following example, containing multiple fractions operation, demonstrates the practical use of mobile fraction calculator.
Problem to solve: calculate fractions: 1/3 * 1 1/2 +3/4
Practical solution to the problem is presented below as a sequence of steps:
Step 1. Start the mobile devices (SmartPhone, iPod Touch, Zune HD) and connect it to the Internet. Open web browser and navigate it to the mobile fraction calculator web page: www.webinfocentral.com/Mobile/Fractions.aspx
Step 2. Enter the 1st fraction 1/3 (it could be also a mixed number or integer) into corresponding text box titled 'Fraction1'. Select the arithmetic operator (in our case it is a multiplication “*”) using the dropdown control, located below the text box (this dropdown is marked with little triangle pointing downward).
Step 3. Enter mixed number 1 1/2 into the corresponding text box titled 'Fraction2'. In general, it could also be a regular fraction or integer. Select the second arithmetic operation (in our case it’s addition “+”) using the lower dropdown control.
Step 4. Enter the 3rd fraction or mixed number into the corresponding text box titled ‘Fraction3’. In our example it is a regular fraction 3/4. Note: in case you do not have a 3rd fraction, then just leave this text box blank.
Step 5. Click on the screen button marked with "=" sign to get the result shown as the mixed number 1 1/4 and corresponding decimal: 1.25.
