Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin will co-host the upcoming 82nd Academy Awards ceremony, being held on March 7th, 2010! Producers Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman, describe them as “the perfect pair” for hosting the Oscars and hope higher ratings for the show will be the result. Though both have been presenters at the star-studded event, this will be Baldwin’s first time hosting. Martin first hosted the ceremony in 2001 and then again in 2003.
However, this is not the first time there has been more than one host. Douglas Fairbanks and William DeMille (former president and vice-president of the film academy) co-hosted the first ceremony in 1929. The awards were presented and speeches given during an Academy banquet, held at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Two hundred seventy people attended the event, at $5 at ticket. The last time more than one host was chosen was in 1987 with Chevy Chase, Goldie Hawn, and Paul Hogan.
The Academy is obviously undergoing a few changes, such as the honorary Oscars segment being moved to November, in a different event entirely. And not only are they adding a host, but also more Best Picture nominees. There will be not 5, but 10 nominees this year, leaving the category open to a broader range of films.
Last year’s ratings were up due to Hugh Jackman’s hosting talents, but he declined his return after being asked. Over all, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin will no doubt, make a great team, making the 2010 Oscars incredible.
