
Woman gets probation for biting 3-year-old daughter
Howell, Mich. – Jamie Barnes, 27, apologized and pleaded no contest in Livingston Circuit Court this morning for biting her then 3-year-old daughter. She said she was trying to teach the toddler a lesson about not biting that she claims she learned from parenting classes. Assistant Prosecutor Miriam Cavanaugh put Barnes under probation and said a court hearing is scheduled for Nov. 9 to reunite the mother with her two children.
MSP Trooper Charged with 10 Sex Crimes
Lansing, Mich. - Joseph Donovan, a Michigan State Police trooper was arraigned yesterday. He has been accused of sexually assaulting two women. The Flint Journal reported a 28-year-old woman and a 29-year-old woman were assaulted. Police reports say he met the women at a Lansing-area bar. Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton has charged Donovan with six counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, three counts of third-degree CSC and a count of assault with intent to commit sexual penetration. The Lansing State Journal reports the 21-year veteran assigned to the Lansing post was placed on unpaid suspension. Donovan's preliminary exam will be held Nov. 5 in Lansing. He didn't have an attorney on record with the court.
Landlord tenant dispute leads to fatal shots fired by police
Center Line, Mich. - A fight between a landlord and tenant led to a 40-year-old Macomb County man being fatally shot by police. It happened yesterday when two officers responded to a domestic call. The officers reportedly entered the home through a side door. When the landlord/suspect were given several verbal warnings to surrender his weapon, police opened fire after the man pointed a shotgun at them.
Bicyclist dies after being hit by car
Sterling Heights, Mich. – A 76-year-old man who was bicycling and crossed the road was hit by a Clinton Township Woman. The Man died yesterday, Oct. 28 at St. John Macomb Hospital in Warren. The woman was driving a Saturn Vue, was reportedly not injured. The accident is under investigation. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the accident to call police at 586-446-2920.
Teens stopped by police in possession of rifle
Detroit, Mich. – When police responded to a resident’s call saying they saw two teens with a shotgun in the road, police stopped them at the 16500 block of Asbury Park. Police discovered one of teens had a shotgun down their pant leg. They were detained and taken to the City’s 6th Precinct on Warwick Street. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
Detroit Police Chief Evans involved in shooting
Detroit, Mich. – When two officers were conducting patrols on the east side, they observed two men, a 27-year-old and a 19-year-old walking down Yacama Street acting in suspicious way. When approached the men took off running. When pursued by Detroit Police Chief Evans and the officers, the 27-year-old man pulled out his pistol and aimed it at Evans and another officer. The officer fired striking the suspect in his side. The man was taken to the hospital where he is in serious condition but expected to recover. The 19-year-old suspected was apprehended without incident. Both men will face arraignment today, Oct. 29.
Woman sentenced in PTO embezzlement
Howell, Mich. – Diane Kilikevicius, 47, of Brighton was sentenced in a Livingston Circuit Court after pleading guilty to one count of embezzlement of $20,000 from the parent-teacher organization at Hawkins Elementary School. She was the PTO treasurer. The 10-year-felony charge will be dropped to a misdemeanor if she meets all conditions of her probation by Sept. 16, 2010. Kilikevicius has already repaid the money to the PTO.
Pontiac man ruled competent to stand trial landscaper’s slaying
Psychiatrists have examined DeWayne Williams, 18, who admitted to shooting Brian Bailo, 31 at the Great Wall Chinese restaurant in Pontiac. All agreed the man is competent to stand trial. On March 9, 2009, Bailo was getting out of the cab of his truck to buy lunch at the restaurant when Williams walked up to him and demanded money. Williams reportedly said, “You will have to shoot me.” Williams then shot Bailo who died in the parking lot. Williams faces life in prison without parole if convicted. He remains jailed without bond. The trial will be before Oakland County Circuit court judge Michael Warren.
