A lot of the time I like being alone.  It's true.  I don't even mind eating alone in restaurants, especially being able to take my cell-phone and laptop, I mean, who'd want to sit with me anyway as I was texting and typing?  But there is still somewhat of a stigma to taking up a whole table in a crowded eating establishment if you're "Just One."  So why not try sitting at the counter? You're not going to get booted or scooted or eyed for taking up too much space.  People who dine together generally don't sit at the counter.  It's perfect for a quick bite or a lingering meal alone.  In the South Suburbs, hot spots are few and far between, but I do have favorites.

Sushi bars are perfect for this and the best is G-In in Tinley Park.  It's unpretentious and it's city-quality sushi (probably because they have another location on Armitage)-- but at a South Suburban single-mom price. Another stowed-away secret is Bergstein's New York Deli in Chicago Heights. There I can eat corned beef on rye with cole slaw and pretend I'm in New York.  There's even a big screen TV so if you do happen to sit at a table and don't have a Blackberry, iPhone or laptop, you still have something to do beside people watch, although that's always fun too and does not require a dining partner.  G-In is a quiet spot even when it's packed; and Bergstein's is usually bustling with the locals.

Each has it's time and place -- just like everything else in our lives, you know?

So how do you feel about going into a restaurant alone? Is it a special getaway where you bury your head in a book or your PDA or is it simply because you're hungry?  Do you feel any stigma saying you need a table "for one?"
