Two obvious shifts in supermarket specials this week: 1) everything is either beef or poultry, and 2) buying in bulk is practically a requirement for everything beef. In response, be sure to read our new feature included when deemed appropriate, “the fine print.”
1. New York Steak, bone-in, $2.99 lb.
Fine print: Must buy four steaks or more. But, you can buy a single New York, bone-in, for $3.99. If these were USDA Choice I’d say double-screaming buy, but with no grade it’s simply a really good buy. Comparison: Safeway’s price $4.99 boneless. A New York can be a little tough but has a great, robust flavor.
2. Whole Frozen Turkeys $6.67, Safeway
Fine print: Flat price for up to 16 lbs. Limit 2, and you gotta leave $20 with Safeway for something. Anything. It’s a minimum purchase. For larger birds, flat price is $8.77. If you are barbequing a turkey or if you are a small caterer, this is a screamin’ buy!
3. Whole Boneless Top Sirloin, $1.99 lb. , Safeway
Fine print: Bulk sale, average weight unknown. This may be my holiday jerky purchase. Lotta work but OMG $2 per pound for ungraded Top and I liked this deal at a buck higher a couple of weeks ago.
4. Porterhouse Steaks $4.99 lb. Save Mart
Fine print: Bulk sale, minimum quantity unknown. Arguably the best steak available, the Porterhouse includes the T-bone and tenderloin. Even ungraded, Porterhouse at $5? Got a freezer?? Use our recipe to make your steak taste better than Morton's for these bad boys!
5. Foster’s Farms Young Whole Chicken $.99, Save Mart
No fine print. This is $.02 more per pound than Wal-Mart and for small quantities that’s a good buy. With you new knowledge of BBQ, why not get a bird, coat with mayonnaise, mustard then chicken rub, then BBQ to 162 internal.. You don’t need no stinkin’ recipe!
