This week is a bit slower than previous weeks for screamin’ deals. Honestly, there is not one here that is worth a contextual bold or underline, but there are some noteworthy offerings from Save Mart and Safeway. Raley’s continues to lag these two retailers in bargains and values.
On a personal note, I’ve all but given up on Raley’s and Bel Air except for some specialty items and some meats and seafood now that I’ve grown accustomed to shopping Safeway and Save Mart. The employees are infinitely more friendly and helpful (see story below), and the cold cases in Save Mart and Safeway are literally packed with bargain meats perfect for barbeque. Here we go.
1. Pork Shoulder (Butt), fresh, bone-in $.99 lb. Save Mart
Fine print: Whole or half, but that isn’t that much quantity. With the bone-in, this is probably the Boston Butt and Picnic, joined with the shoulder bone. I buy these a Wal-Mart for the same price; these may be better. If you’re a meat geek, here’s a complete explanation of the structure and uses of a pork shoulder that I wrote from bbq4dummies.com, and a great , REALLLY great pulled pork slider sandwich recipe. You can easily do this on a charcoal Weber, and give it a day. You can do a butt in an oven too. Just remember this is bone-in, and it's a shoulder and looks like one. Brace yourself if you're used to boneless;-)
2. Whole Frozen Turkeys $6.67 Safeway
Fine print: Flat price for up to 16 lbs. Limit 2, and you gotta leave $20 with Safeway for something. Anything. It’s a minimum purchase. For larger birds, flat price is $8.77. This is a continuation of last week’s deal. The Orangevale Safeway butcher advised me to spend an extra buck and get the premium turkey for $7.67 flat price. Wal-Mart has the identical bird for $.60 pp so at 14 lb. average size this is the better deal. Mine is brining now. I know it’s close to Thanksgiving, but I can’t pass this deal up.
3. Jumbo Raw Gulf Shrimp $5.99 lb. Safeway
Previously frozen, shell on, 21-25 ct. Save-Mart has 41-50 ct. prawns for $4.49 lb. but I like this deal better. I usually buy around 25 ct. (approx 25 prawns per pound) for smoking, and I wouldn’t want to go smaller. Grilling shrimp is about as easy as it gets. Coat with some olive oil and garlic, sprinkle with some Old Bay, and throw ‘em on the grill. They’re done when they are opaque. Grill them in the shell if you like; I’d pull the shells first.
4. New York Steaks $3.99 lb. Save Mart
Fine print: None, pick any size. Yes the deal at SM last week was better at $2.99, but for a buck more you don’t have to buy enough to feed a logging camp. Buy one, buy three, $3.99 lb. and don’t forget this easy tutorial to make your steak taste better than Morton's.
5. London Broil $1.49 lb. Safeway
Fine print: Sold in an extreme value pack. London Broil (round steak) is a tough cut, but it’s the most widely used cut for beef jerky. Looking at the views of our recent article, How to Make Perfect Beef Jerky, lots of people are interested. You might not have a smoker but you probably have an oven and that works fine. Why not give it a try? You have little to lose at this price.
***Special Shout-Out to Jack, Folsom Safeway butcher**
I dropped by to pick up another 5 pounds of the killer $2.67 Top Sirloin before it went off ad tonight. We started talking about my plans for jerky and some Korean beef experimenting, and Jack offered to slice five steaks to my specs (he even took me in back to set the slicer), and he trimmed it as he went. What a guy! Thanks, Jack, I'll be back!
