Like millions of others, I've been glued to the news about the death of Michael Jackson. I've heard a parade of celebrities on
CNN and other news outlets referring to him as an icon which I wholeheartedly agree. Besides, Thriller, Beat It and Billy Jean are part of the tapestry of my own adolescence.
Regardless of the fact of his pure genius and undeniable mark on music from a variety of angles, what I find myself the most focused on now is the tragedy of Michael Jackson.
It's not even necessary to describe the bizarre chain of events that have occurred over the years as the world watched with their heads cocked to the side as if to say, "Huh?" The red flags had been waving about Michael and only intensified over time, the most disturbing being the accusations made against him.
From a therapist's perspective, I think about his "story," which is a fairytale and nightmare combined; fame with a backdrop of abuse, extreme pressure and a loss of childhood. It would make sense if this guy struggled under its' weight. I also can't help but wonder about the people he surrounded himself with and who was really there for him the man - and not him the superstar.
It appears as though much more will be revealed about the cause of death considering a family spokesperson indicated there was prescription drug abuse occurring. I suspect we will learn even more over the coming days and weeks as "insiders" start talking about the life of the "King of Pop."
Personally, I'm curious to know more about Michael Jackson - the man.
