The other Kyle Busch

August 16, 9:42 PM

The other Kyle Busch and the 500,000 mile car
If you are a NASCAR fan,
or even if you read the
sports section of the
Examiner, you likely
know the #18 driver
– Kyle Busch. At age
23, he is really tearing
up tracks with quite a
few wins.

Your National
Automotive Examiner
is the other Kyle Busch.
I had the name way
before the NASCAR
racer was born. I had
my first car at age 15. I learned to drive a standard transmission
on a motor cycle and a truck without being taught. I was 16 and
worked at a machine shop and the delivery driver was out. They
asked me to do a delivery and that was the first time I drove a
vehicle with a standard transmission.

My first car was a 68 Beetle which cost $125, and my friend’s father
rebuilt the engine. I had about $400 into the car and I sold it after about
a year. The only black girl in my high school wanted to buy my Beetle
because a mutual friend also had a Beetle. As I remember, this girl was
in the Honor Society, she dressed neatly and had a tidy appearance. I
sold her the car for $600. After all, I had $400 in the car with the rebuilt
engine and free labor from my friend’s father.

I visited the girl’s home after the sale, and I could see that her family
was struggling. A couple of days later, I again went to her home and I
gave her $200 back. She was grateful and I received a kiss on my right
cheek. From what I remember, she and her brother both used the car
to go to college.

In 1991 I bought a used 1986 WV Jetta with 82,000 miles for $2,600.
With the somewhat high mileage, I had a compression check done on
the engine before the purchase. The compression was good, and the
mechanic who worked on the car said it would go double the 82,000
miles on the odometer. I was hoping to get 30 or 40 thousand miles
out of it. Well, I have driven the car for 17 years and the odometer just
turned 500,000 miles (Some good car karma must have come out of
my first VW experience!). I still drive the car about 100 miles on average
five days a week. I do a little driving each day to work with kids and their
families, and oh, I do like cars too!  I am the other Kyle Busch.
