Republican National Convention September 1st - 4th 2008

August 13, 9:30 AM
by Kyle Busch, Automotive Examiner

2003 Cadillac CTS
Some excerpts I
read from a news
release on the
Republican
National
Convention stated
that GM will be
the provider of
vehicles for the
2008 convention
.- as they have
been for the last seven conventions.

The news release also stated that GM will be providing more than 300
cars and light trucks representing a mix of highly fuel-efficient vehicles
that include E85 ethanol flex-fuel and hybrid technology. GM offers many
vehicles that achieve 30 mpg on the highway, many flex-fuel vehicles that
can run on E85, and groundbreaking technology such as GM's two-mode
hybrid system found in its full-size light trucks.

John McCain, GM, and big oil?

A survey done by U.S
News and World Report
showed that import cars
to be a more popular
choice among Democrats
than Republicans,
with 71% of Democrats
claiming to drive one
In the survey,
Republicans endorsed
Ford and GM cars by
almost a two-to-one
margin compared with
Democrats, who
preferred Hondas and
Toyotas.

This is interesting because in the article I did on the Democratic National
ConventionGM was also the vehicle provider of choice as it had been for
the last eight conventions. Even though it seems that Democrats prefer
imports, I suppose it wouldn’t be “politically correct” to have an import car
maker as the vehicle provider for their convention. However, as I stated in
my DNC article, Obama owns a Ford Escape Hybrid.

Republican Presidential Nominee John McCain drives a 2003 Cadillac
CTS, a sedan the Environmental Protection Agency says gets 16 to 24
miles per gallon. Of course just like Barack Obama, when John McCain
is campaigning he's ferried by the Secret Service using a fleet of Chevrolet
Suburbans - a full-size SUV the EPA estimates as getting 12 to 20 mpg.

Is Republican John McCain more connected to big oil than Democrat
Barack Obama as indicated by the vehicles they occasionally drive?
You be the judge!
