World's cleanest car - and not because it was just washed either!

August 11, 6:48 AM
by Kyle Busch, Automotive Examiner

We have heard of running on empty, but running on air?
I know, that was
a lame attempt
to be funny. But
this car isn’t
funny. It is pretty
serious as far
as an entirely
new concept
when it comes
to “clean” cars.
This thing runs
on compressed
air. Is it possible?
Yep, a company
called ZPM (Zero  Pollution Motors headed by a Formula One race
car engineer) hasdesigned and developed currently operating
prototypes of a vehicle that runs on compressed air. The company
holds 40 patents on the proprietary technology used to design and
develop these vehicles.

This is truly going to be a multinational car meaning that the company’s
office is based in southeastern New York state and a recent licensing
agreement with India’s No. 1 car manufacturer, Tata Motors, has
accelerated development at the production plant in Nice, France. This
vehicle has actually been featured on NBC’s today show and also in
Time Magazine as one of its best inventions of 2007.

As far as how the engine works, well even after reading the website
(http://zeropollutionmotors.us) and watching the video’s of the engine
operation, I’m not entirely clear on all the aspects of the engine other
than the fact that it can operate in 4 different modes from running strictly
on compressed air from an on board air tanks at low speeds to being
able to actually recharge those tanks at higher speeds with an on board
air heater to expand the volume of the air.

From what the companies website says, the vehicle will sell for less than
$18,000 which further enhances its possibilities of use here in the U.S.
and as I said, the company already has operating prototypes. ZPM will
begin taking reservations in mid 2009 for US deliveries of the vehicle in
2010.

This sounds pretty intriguing doesn’t it?
