Democratic National Convention August 25th – 28th 2008
For the 8th time in a row, General Motors has been selected as the official vehicle provider for the Democratic National Convention Committee. The selection is based on the automaker’s large selection of flex-fuel and hybrid cars, especially alternative fuel versions of SUV’s. GM is providing about 400 vehicles for delegates, media and convention staff.
It has been reported by DNCC officials that all auto manufacturers had a chance to bid for the contract to be the official vehicle for the DNCC, but they wouldn't disclose if any other companies sought the bid.
Info from the Democratic National Conventions website reports that the percentage of DNCC vehicles using highest fuel efficiencies and technologies is 100%.
Now, how “Green” is the Democratic Presidential Nominee? Well, the March 4th 2008 issue of Car and Driver reported that Obama was driving a Chrysler 300C. This coming after a speech that he gave May 7th 2007 to the Detroit Economic Club where Barack Obama said; "The auto industry is on a path that is unacceptable and unsustainable -- for their business, for their workers, and for America. And America must take action to make it right. ... For too long, we've been either too afraid to ask our automakers to meet higher fuel standards or unwilling to help them do it. But the truth is ... we have to do both. We must demand that they revamp their production, we must assist that transition, and we must make the choice to buy these cars when we have the option."
In another article published February 14th 2008 on Hybridcars.com, it was reported that Obama had traded his Chrysler 300C in July 2007 for a Ford Escape Hybrid.
So, who do we believe..? Well, in another article published May 25th 2008 by Rueters, Obama stated "These days I don't drive much," He said "I bought a hybrid, but we keep it in the garage mostly."
So Obama seems “to have done the right thing” based on his hybrid purchase. However, he gets driven around by his Secret Service Agents and therefore, he does not drive the hybrid very much. Like other aspects of politics, this is about as clear as it gets!
