The New Toyota Highlander Hybrid

August 22, 8:54 PM
by Kyle Busch, Automotive Examiner

In my last article, I discussed the new and improved Subaru Forester

as a contender rather than just a pretender. With its new Forester,

Subaru managed to keep the gas mileage pretty much the same

and provide consumers with more vehicle for the same money as

the last model.

With gas prices still way above what drivers would like, the Forester’s

28 miles per gallon on the highway is reasonable, but what if you need

a larger SUV?  One vehicle to consider is the newly redesigned Toyota

Highlander Hybrid.

The Highlander is

now a larger vehicle

when compared to

the previous model.

Edmunds.com says

that the Highlander

is clearly the most

practical hybrid SUV

on the market and

that it is a functional

family vehicle that

has the best

gas mileage of any crossover its size.

This new  Hybrid has a 3.3 liter gasoline engine rated at 208 horsepower and two electric motors, one up front and one in the back, providing a combined 270 horsepower. This gives this Hybrid usable power on mountain inclines or for passing on the highway.  This hybrid is a front-wheel drive vehicle, and the electric motor in the back drives the rear wheels for added power. However, even though it technically can be called an “all-wheel drive,” it has no center differential and power is not transferred from the gasoline engine to the rear wheels.  Therefore, if you need a true all-wheel drive, the regular Highlander with its all-wheel drive option is a better choice!

The interior is a nice place to spend time

The interior

of the Highlander

Hybrid is well

designed and

functional. It is

available with a

third-row seat.

The second row

seat is a 40/20/40

 split-design including

a “center stow” feature which allows the middle 20 percent of the

seat to stow flat into the floor allowing easy walk through to the

third row seat.

Families that have a need for even larger SUVs or minivans will still prefer vehicles such as the GMC Arcadia or the Mazda CX-9.  However, for environmentally concerned families, the seven-passenger Toyota Highlander Hybrid is one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles on the market.  Expect to get about 27 miles per gallon in the city and Toyota's reputation of reliability. This Highlander will start at $33,700.
