Are auto manufacturers producing a “new” classification of car to meet gas mileage standards?

September 27, 9:06 PM
by Kyle Busch, Automotive Examiner

A “new” classification of car? What do I mean by that? Well, it
seems that recently with the appearance of the Smart FourTwo
we are now looking at a car that is classified as a Micro Car.
Yep, they call it a Micro Car, it’s so small that it’s not even a
miniature car.

There are some other manufacturers that are stepping into the
Micro Car arena such as the following:

Fiat is now producing the Fiat 500

and the Indian company Tata is
producing the Tata Nano.

There are also a few concept cars that just might make it to
production,

Toyota is currently showing
their Toyota iQ

and even BMW is throwing the
idea around of producing one.

Now, some of you might be wondering where the Mini Cooper
falls into this since it’s a very small car also. Well, the Mini is
classified as a super mini or subcompact car. Confused yet?
Yeah, I know!

Anyway, this article started out as an article about Micro Cars
and I put the word “new” in quotations as many of you may
have never heard of a Micro Car before and there has been
a bit of a resurgence of Micro Cars lately but, it is by no means
anything new. Micro Cars have been around for a long, long time.

Here is a very short list of Micro Cars.

1958 Fiat 500 Jolly

Subaru 360

1963 Peel P50

1957 King Midget Model 3

1952 Champion 400

So, you see, Micro Cars have been around for quite a long time
and the list of them is actually quite extensive. I would venture
to say that over the years there has been probably well over
200 or more models of Micro Cars.

For an interesting trip back in time to see some of the Micro Cars,
check out this website: http://www.microcarmuseum.com/tourindex.html

I highly recommend it. There are some VERY interesting cars on
the website.
