The ability to maintain balance is a complex process that depends on three major components: your sensory system for accurate information about body position; your brain's ability to process this information; and your muscles and joints for coordinating the movements required to maintain balance. In a healthy individual, all of the major components work together in harmony with the brain.
When a normal routine is disrupted by falls or balance disorders, it can be profoundly disheartening. You may be at risk if you have symptoms of dizziness and unsteadiness, take one or more medications, experience a period of best rest or inactivity, and have loss of strength or feeling in the legs and/or feet. What can you do if you have a balance disorder? Contrary to popular belief, balance problems aren't a normal part of aging. People of various ages experience difficulty in balance. The Balance Program at the Hazleton Health & Wellness Center has highly-trained physical therapists and computerized balance equipment to assist in assessing imbalance. A referral from a family physician is required in order to begin balance assessment and treatment in the program.
What is the Balance Program? The Balance Program provides a comprehensive evaluation and treatment plan if you struggle with imbalance, poor coordination, or dizziness of any type. Once the balance issue is correctly identified, therapy can help you improve not only your balance, but also your confidence. The majority of the physical treatment is one-on-one physical therapy with a trained therapist. The Hazleton Health & Wellness Center is the only program in the area that has incorporated the use of a virtual computer system to assist in the assessment and treatment process. The computerized exercises allow you to become more familiar with your personal level of balance.
