Throughout all of season five, people on the forums, people commenting on articles, and fans watching at home have complained about the new path Lost seemed to be taking--much to the annoyance of others who were just along for the ride. Audiences are still largely positive, and the numbers likely won't falter next year in the show's final season, and yet those people who are dissatisfied are loud and refuse to be ignored. Sure, since the first moment when Jack woke confused in the jungle, Lost has gone down many roads with mythology, secrets and a grand plan only now being revealed to us. And no matter how "different" the show has gotten, here is my defense, and the reasons why I will be watching, even if others of you aren't.
Finally some freaking answers! For those of you who have been confused about time travel, the Dharma Initiative, and basically everything else that's been going on lately (from Claire to John Locke being inhabited by some old creepy guy) in the final episodes, we will finally get some answers! Above all, we can finally get some closure on what is going on, what it all means, and what it was all for. Were the passengers of flight 815 chosen by destiny, and why them? What is the full back story of the Others, and what is the secret of their baby stealing roots? What is Smokey? Why is the island so special? Finally we will learn the answers to these questions and more...and all get a better sleep at night. Frankly, stopping watching the show this close to the end is sort of like dropping out of high school in the last semester of senior year.
Jacob vs Smokey Okay, in previous articles, I suggested that the whole show had been leading up to an epic battle between Jacob and the Smoke Monster, in which the characters were the warriors or sorts. Maybe this battle between two supernatural men is just the thing that led everyone there to their destiny. Some have complained even directly to me that it would be a let down if all of these years of lead up was just to have it be all about two characters we don't know much about. That's true, but I don't think next year will be focused on just these two men and nothing more by any means. I think that this story taking place years ago merely set the stage for what we have been watching all these years, and plays as sort of a history lesson. And if you think about it, the characters of Lost have always been under the influence of characters we didn't know but wanted to learn more about. Season one, we wondered who the Others were, and knew what a threat they were to the 815ers. In season two, the Dharma Initiative became a mystery as Jack and Co explored the hatch, and Ben was introduced. Season three four taught us more about the others and what they meant to the castaways. Then season five finally shed some light on Dharma and gave us a glimpse. Jacob will likely be a character we learn about this next year...how does he affect and relate to the characters we already know, and how will he affect their outcome? I don't know, but I'm watching to find out.
Change is good Another thing someone has constantly been pointing out to me about the "differences" in the show is that back in the early days, things were so much more simple. True, my brain hurt a lot less when all I was wondering about was are they gonna get rescued? and what's that strange noise in the jungle? but honestly, if that was all the show was still about, would any of us still be watching? Just like Jacob was talking about in the finale, the show has progressed. Gone are the days of simplicity, but how boring would it be if Jack was still running around being a grumpy doctor while Sayid tampers with a coconut phone and Kate flirts with Sawyer? Both our characters and the show have grown up.
Goodbyes How could we give up on these people we have become so invested in? How could we walk away and not learn what happened to Claire? Whether or not Jack will ever triumph over his father? Who Kate will end up with? As sad as it will be, it is time for everyone to come full circle and say their goodbyes. I know that each character will get a good send off that will be wither sweet or shocking (after all this is Lost, it's what they do best) and no matter what happens, I'm going to be there to take in every last morsel.
Now, I'm sure many of you are saying that isn't a good enough reason for me to watch or complaining that it doesn't change the fact that, well, your show has changed. Others are agreeing and knowing that you're going to stay loyal and take in all of the goodness (after all, you know like I do what an awesome and suspenseful season it's been) and to you I say Cheers! Stay loyal Lost fans, the best is yet to come.
