Seattlites flee to Orcas for Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is about red heart shaped boxes, cards and jazzy saxophone love songs. Right? Well, maybe for 13 year olds. Grown ups want to celebrate by being alone (together). So what better than a romantic escape from the city to beautiful Orcas Island?
Take a ferry ride out to this gem in the San Juans. In the off-season resorts and private homes on Orcas are available at super low rates. Try Bilbo's Festivo for great Mexican food. Get a Valentine's Day discount on massage at Ama Tara Healing Arts Center.
Drive or cycle up through Moran State Park and check out the wildlife and look-out tower. If you love extreme kayaking - this is the place to get into lots of trouble, especially in the winter.
Rent a private cottage on the island, stay at a hotel or a resort. Information and links available from the Orcas Lodging Association. Two budget-conscious recommendations:
Smuggler's Villa sits near the airport and is on flat ground. This is the place for families and large groups who want to save money. The pool is closed in the off season, but there is a community indoor hot tub and dry sauna.
Beach Haven Resort is your Seattle Nightlife Examiner's personal favorite. Cabins and small homes tucked into the woods, right up at the water make this place feel like a vacation community. Take a hike up the hill, a walk along the beach, or build a fire in one of the pits.
