With any luck, it will be the moment the campaign turned. John McCain, unable to remember how many homes he owns is the sweetest gift he could have provided Barack Obama and, by all accounts, the Obama campaign has accepted it gratefully and intends to take full advantage of it. Obama is talking about it on the campaign trail today, his surrogates are on national news shows helping Senator McCain remember, and the Obama campaign has already launched an ad they will show widely.
Among the various points hit on by Obama: McCain's claim awhile back that we've made great economic progress; McCain's (possibly tongue-in-cheek) claim that $5 million is the threshold for richness; Phil Gramm's claim that we've become a "nation of whiners"; and of course the houses gaffe.
Separately, the Obama campaign is apparently planning to deploy surrogates in at least 16 states to press the "houses" attack. (Link)
More importantly, it allows Obama to take the offensive after weeks of playing defense and allows him to hammer away on McCain's most vulnerable spot - the Bush economy that McCain endorses and intends to continue.
