“American consumers continue to pay the price at the pump, while oil companies post record profits,” said Leahy. “With food and transportation prices rising with the exploding price of oil, it is important to hear what the multibillion-dollar oil companies are doing to help ease the crunch, and consider what actions the federal government should take to help consumers.”

I wrote the other day about the growing clamor for windfall profit taxes levied against big oil.  I just don't believe it's any business of the government telling private industry what kinds of profits they can make.  Congress and the Bush Administration have been bending over backwards providing big oil companies with tax credits and subsidies for the last six years.  If Senator Leahy and his Committee are really serious about reining in what they believe is abuse by big oil, it ought to come by taking away all the giveaways that have been provided to the industry by Congress.
