John McCain's new ad is dumb

July 21, 1:48 PM

John McCain's new campaign ad takes aim at Barack Obama, trying to link Obama to gas prices and suggesting he's the cause for "rising prices at the pump".   Here's the ad:

Here's why it's a dumb ad:

  -  John McCain still opposes drilling in ANWR and has, until it became politically expedient in the last month, opposed drilling on the continental shelf off the U.S. coast.  So he's, in fact, one of those who said "no to drilling in America" and "no to independence from foreign oil"

  -  Even the most gung ho proponents of drilling acknowledge any supply from the new sites would be unavailable to the market for 8 to 10 years and have minimal impact on the price at the pump.

  -  Given that John McCain has been in Congress for 26 years and Barack Obama has been there all of 4 years, it raises the obvious question of who is more responsible for the current price of gasoline.  Since our dependency on foreign oil is a good deal longer than 4 years, it would seem Senator McCain has alot more to answer for than Senator Obama.  In fact, here's a recent quote from Senator McCain:

"Let me give you a little bit of straight talk on energy. Our dangerous dependence on foreign oil has been thirty years in the making, and was caused by the failure of politicians in Washington to think long term about the future of the country.'"

  -  The oil companies currently hold leases on 60 million acres of federal land that are available to them for oil drilling.  They have chosen not to do oil exploration on that land and Senator McCain has done nothing to encourage the oil companies to explore U.S. land that's been available for some time.  I would call that a failure on Senator McCain's part to free us from that dependence on foreign oil he professes to care so much about now.
