Barack Obama's campaign said today that they plan to do something tomorrow evening; a televised town hall meeting or a one on one interview with designated debate moderator Jim Lehrer. Can John McCain allow Barack Obama to have this kind of publicity?
While there's been significant progress on the bailout legislation, any definitive resolution is at least a couple days away. Given Senator McCain's oh so principled stand that he needs to be in Washington sheparding the bill through Congress, can he really go to Mississippi tomorrow evening to debate Senator Obama and not look like he's abandoning that oh so principled commitment?
Libertarian candidate Bob Barr has volunteered to take Senator McCain's place at the debate. Since third party candidates are so rarely offered the opportunity to debate the Republican and Democratic nominees, that might be interesting (and maybe even enlightening for the Republcians watching).
But my favorite bit of conjecture; Bill Krystol has suggested that since McCain is so busy pouring over the details of the bailout legislation, he should send his vice presidential pick to debate Obama in his place.
I would pay to see that.
