Conyers to investigate Suskind allegations

August 21, 3:05 PM

House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers issued letters of inquiry today to I. Lewis (Scooter) LIbby, the former Chief of Staff to Vice President Cheney.  The letters request Mr. Libby to contact the House committee to arrange his testimony before the committee regarding allegations contained in Ron Suskind's book that White House personnel forged a letter linking Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda.

From Conyers letter to Libby:

"I have become very concerned with the possibility that this Administration may have violated federal law by using the resources of our intelligence agencies to influence domestic policy processes or opinion," Conyers wrote Libby, who was convicted of obstruction of justice in the outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame. "The law specifically provides that "[n]o covert action may be conducted which is intended to influence United States political processes, public opinion, policies, or media."

Rep. Conyers issued a similar letter to Robert Richer, the former CIA Deputy Director of Clandestine Operations.  Richer is the source for Suskind's allegation of White House involvement in the letter forgery.

I wrote before:

Over 4,000 dead.  Tens of thousands wounded.  A couple trillion dollars of borrowed money spent.  Is everyone so tired of this war they are willing to give a pass to those who would mislead Americans to build support for a war thats only justification had to be forged?
