Budget Travel spotlights coolest small towns in America, nominations begin for 2010
It's that time again. Last year, Budget Travel magazine went looking for the Coolest Small Town in America. Readers nominated their favorites and voted online, and the magazine announced the winners on the CBS Early Show in April.
That was then. This is now. The October issue of the magazine spotlights the Ten Coolest Towns in America -- which, as it turns out, is different from the list that resulted from the readers' poll. But no matter -- cool is cool, and there's plenty of room for all the cool small towns you can imagine.
First, here are the winners of the readers' poll:
1. Owego, New York (not to be confused with Oswego, NY)
2. Rockland, Maine
3. Grinnell, Iowa
4. Vevay, Indiana
5. Huntingdon, Pennsylvania
6. Onancock, Virginia
7. Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania
8. Mineral Point, Wisconsin
9. Silverton, Oregon
10. Port Royal, South Carolina
And here's the list from the October 2009 issue of Budget Travel:
1. Cayucas, California
2. Lexington, Virginia
3. Breaux Bridge, Louisiana
4. Tubac, Arizona
5. Wallace, Idaho
6. Saugerties, New York
7. Mount Vernon, Iowa
8. Jacksonville, Oregon
9. Rockland, Maine
10. Whitefish, Montana
So now you have 20 great small towns to choose from. Actually 19, since Rockland made both lists.
