In an effort to lessen the Black Friday madness that caused the death of a Wal-Mart employee last year while attempting to control an unruly crowd, Wal-Mart has announced that most of their stores will remain open for 24 hours on Thanksgiving Day. This schedule change will allow shoppers to shop - or wait - inside the stores as early as they wish for the doorbuster specials that draw large crowds. Although customers may enter the stores at any time on Thanksgiving Day or night, the featured specials will not go on sale until 5:00 a.m.
November 27, the day after Thanksgiving, is referred to as Black Friday since it traditionally pushes retailers into black ink representing their annual profits, as opposed to red ink for losses. Considered the most frantic shopping day of the year, bargain-hunters are generally out at the crack of dawn, waiting in lines at most stores for the doors to open. Many of the early-bird specials feature deep discounts in electronics and toys, and special items can sell out early.
Wal-Mart also intends to spread the discounted items throughout the store, rather than clustering them by department, in an effort to have better control of any crowds that congregate. Additional safety measures will be put in place on a store-by-store basis, depending on the physical layout of each store.
Inquiring minds can only wonder if Wal-Mart will also stock up on sleeping bags to sell to the early-bird shoppers who plan to spend all night in the store, waiting for those popular gifts at special prices.
