Cruisers on the southernmost tip of Mexico’s Baja California are keeping a sharp eye on Hurricane Rick. With winds reported to have been a record-breaking 175 mph on Sunday morning, boaters are bracing for the second strongest hurricane on record in the eastern Pacific Ocean. The storm is currently reported to be less than 500 miles south of Los Cabos, as of noon Pacific Time on Sunday, October 18, 2009. (Click here to see NOAA’s five-day chart.)
The project path shows Rick nearing land late Tuesday evening. Because it’s moving over cooler waters as Rick moves northward, its winds are expected to decrease in velocity. High surf is still expected along the Mexican coast from Acapulco north along mainland coast and along Baja California.
According to an AP report (click here), the Category 5 storm threatens a fishing tournament scheduled to begin on Wednesday. Bisbee’s Los Cabos tournament has about 130 boats registered, with more late entrants expected.
Registrants in the Baja Ha-Ha will want to watch the progress of this storm as it may affect the October 26th date the rally is scheduled to depart from San Diego.
