On October 26, 2009, all are welcome to join the farewell ceremony for the Baja Ha-Ha. Friends, members of the public and the media are expected to be jockeying for position at the west end of Shelter Island, San Diego, California for the 10:00 a.m. Baja Ha-Ha Parade of Boats. A fire boat will salute the rally with a fan of spray as the fleet of almost 200 boats departs and heads for Los Cabos, Mexico. Participants in the spectacle will be dressed in Halloween costumes.
The Port of San Diego, Harbor Police and a variety of marine businesses are promoting the fleet's departure to local media outlets. With only two stopovers on the passage south, the trek is expected to last approximately ten days, culminating in a Los Cabos celebration on November 7.
The national yachting examiner will cover the departing ceremony from the vantage point of the prow of s/v Last Resort, a Catalina 470, to be piloted by co-owner Dick Drechsler, author of the popular book, Manning Up In Alaska. Also crewing aboard Last Resort will be Sandy Prentice, Terri Watson and Kimi Harrison – all from the San Francisco Bay area. (Watson and Harrison are owners of s/v Delphinus, which has been adopted by this column during its preparation for and participation in the 2010 Pacific Cup.)
“The best part of it all [preparing for the Pacific Cup] is that the things that are left on our ‘to do’ list to prep for the Pacific Cup are also on our ‘get ready for cruising anyway’ list,” says Watson, who is executive director of the Bay area-based Farallones Marine Sanctuary Association (FMSA). FMSA is a nonprofit organization that seeks to provide education about and increased public awareness and political support for NOAA's Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary.
“As I glean from reading our skipper, Dick Drechsler’s, book Manning Up In Alaska, the pursuit of a dream sometimes takes a long time before getting to the serious cruising part. But all the steps in between are important as well. We work to enjoy where we are, and always move towards bigger dreams.”
