Hsiao-Ching Chou is a partner at Suzuki + Chou Communimedia, where she serves as a senior consultant in communications. For nearly eight years prior, she was the award-winning food editor at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer newspaper. She and her television producer husband live in Seattle with their daughter, who was born in October 2006.

What does this have to do with parenting? I choose to buy foods that are "evergreen" -- which is what we in Seattle call local, seasonal, sustainable. No, my buying record is not perfect. But being aware of my food choices helps ensure my family eats the most wholesome foods I can buy. We aren't health nuts, we're flavor nuts. When your food doesn't travel thousands of miles and it is harvested at just the right time, it tastes better. For example, I avoid fresh tomatoes most of the year and buy them only when they're in season and available at my favorite farmers' market. That's when they are perfectly ripe and bursting with that intense tomato flavor. This NYT series is long. But it's something to think about.
