It inspired much vitriol from people who believe children should not be present in restaurants that aren't deemed "family-friendly." I said that there are bad restaurant parents and good restaurant parents. I don't believe that a child should be allowed to behave as he or she wishes. There is a protocol when dining out and that must be followed. Also, if a child acts up, then a good restaurant parent will step outside with that child until the situation has calmed down.
I guess what inspired the column was the lack of choices when it comes to restaurants that are willing to accommodate families that also serve the kind of contemporary cuisine that I enjoy eating. I also come from a culture that values having the entire family at the table.
If we don't include our children in a variety of dining situations, then they won't learn how to behave in those different circumstances. They also won't have an understanding of how to appreciate different styles of cuisines and atmospheres.
