Here is aseries from The New York Times about the complexities of the modern food chain. Did you know that the largest producer of kiwis is Italy -- not New Zealand? Read all about it here. What does this have to do with parenting? I choose to buy foods that are "evergreen" -- which is what we in Seattle call local, seasonal, sustainable. No, my buying record is not perfect. But being aware of my food choices helps ensure my family eats the most wholesome foods I can buy. We aren't health nuts, we're flavor nuts. When your food doesn't travel thousands of miles and it is harvested at just the right time, it tastes better. For example, I avoid fresh tomatoes most of the year and buy them only when they're in season and available at my favorite farmers' market. That's when they are perfectly ripe and bursting with that intense tomato flavor. This NYT series is long. But it's something to think about.
